Blue Egg, Nuclear and Ride 100

I’ve had the best weekend and now I am ready for my bed!

I had a long weekend so was off from work on Friday and took a bike ride back out to the Blue Egg cafe with friends.  When you take the day off work to cycle you expect a little bit of sun – rude of the weather to be overcast and as we arrived at the Blue Egg the skies opened, which gave us an excuse to fill ourselves up on breakfast followed by cake.  I couldn’t finish my breakfast or my cake – I mean my blog name is Fat Girl Fit and I made a weak attempt I’m sorry to say.

Saturday saw a trip to my favourite place, Nuclear Races, for their summer BBQ and I took with my my husband, niece and nephew and met friends there too.  It was, as usual, amazing.  So many familiar friendly faces and everyone there to do one thing and that is have fun and get muddy!  There were so many obstacles to play on and the kids completely embraced getting wet and muddy I think I had a smile on my face for the entire time.

IMG_6828

Sunday was the Prudential Ride 100 event and I took part with two lovely friends, Helen and Kat, who are part of our Newcastle to London team.  100 miles on the bike with friends was a lot of fun.  Minus Leith Hill.  I do not like her. She is a miserable old cow.

IMG_6827

We saw a lot of the results of accidents on the ride but we continued and I had a great day.  Made even better with the amazing Romford CC members, and other halves at the finish line complete with new club mascot and amazing banner.  Couldn’t ask for a better club!  And that means that this week I have cycled over 275 miles so my training is bang on for the Newcastle ride!

Support network

When training for events and to increase fitness I have found one of the most important elements is a support network.  For me I would say this is invaluable.

My support includes the following:

  • My cycling club Romford CC
  • My secondary cycling club Hornchurch CC
  • My running club Havering ’90 Joggers
  • Members of a local triathlon club (although I am not a member) Havering Tri
  • And of course friends and family

I can say with absolute certainty that whilst I am not at the end of my fitness and weight loss journey that I would not have achieved what I have to date without the support I received.

They have all been people who provided both emotional and practical help and were a tower of strength for me, especially when I was not feeling so strong myself, and I know are a group of individuals who all provide support for one another and will always help if they are able to.

Now I know many people do this alone and that is also possible but to give some examples of support I am referring to:

  • My husband first and foremost who I am lucky is a cycling coach but also takes time out to ride and run with me at my pace to help me improve.  He is also at every event I take place in and vice versa with me doing the same for him.  He is also like my very own accountability partner as he knows what I am trying to achieve and can help encourage me along the way.
  • Cycling club where there are too many to mention who have taken time to cycle with me and help me, and continue to do so, as I try and improve.  An example is when my husband and his friend Tim were going to do the Ride London 100 mile bike ride together in 2014 and decided they would ride with me instead, which was amazing.  Not to mention my secondary cycling club who are just as supportive.
  • Running club with many who welcomed me and the amazing interval sessions conducted by Dave.
  •  Local triathlon club that I am not actually a member of, though my husband is, but I am lucky that I have numerous friends in the club who have always offered support and advice when needed.
  • Friends and family who I think for the most part just think I am a bit mental trying to do all this stuff – I probably am but then again the best people are!  Especially Helen, Laura, Steve and Nikki who is just so positive and mental and I love them all.
  • I can’t forget the amazing Team Scrambled Legs who I have done obstacle runs with and who I am sure I would be left dangling on a 4 meter wall or face down in mud if it were not for their assistance.
  • The amazing Nuclear Races family, especially Lisa, Tracey and Craig who have all helped me with hints and tips at their obstacle training sessions.
  • And of course everyone who reads my ramblings on this blog – I’ve made virtual friends with several people who also offer encouragement which is amazing and really helps!

I can’t recommend joining a club enough as it can make such a difference.

I know I don’t look like your average sports person (I won’t say athlete as definitely doesn’t fit) and yes it can be hard when you tell people what you are training for and they look at you in complete disbelief but I am and I will and I continue to improve and will continue even more so.

Don’t expect everyone to understand the journey you are on.  Surround yourself with people who believe in you.  Strive for progress and not perfection.  Allow yourself to be a beginner as no one starts at the top – I made this mistake comparing myself to many people who have been running/cycling etc for years and wondering why I am not yet at their level.  Most importantly don’t give up and go and smash those goals!

Trying to keep up with fitness whilst on holiday

I’ve just been on a two week holiday in the States and with me I took my running kit.  Running is not something I find easy and I knew if I took two weeks off I would struggle when I returned and was going to be going to some really pretty areas which would help motivate me to run whilst on holiday and so that is what I did.

img_5768

That and the fact that I’ve been to the States a lot before I knew what to expect with portion sizes and how hard it would be to resist some of the tasty foods on offer – would be rude to travel all that way and not have pancakes, good pizza, bagels and lots of wine too!

I would like to say they were just casual runs, which in one way they were but I got lost on every single one – my sense of direction is not something to brag about.  Still I was not out to break any records (which is good as I am not that quick) and so took the opportunity to take photos on my way.

I ran in Basking Ridge, New Jersey:

Also Central Park in Manhattan whilst killing time as my husband took part in the Gran Fondo New York 100 mile bike race:

img_5567

Next was back to Basking Ridge followed by Yardley in Philadelphia:

And finally onto Chicago to run along some of Lake Michigan.

img_5767

As I ran I not only took photos of the areas but also houses up for sale because well you never know.  Could I live in the States? Absolutely! Either in the burbs with a house with a wrap around deck or in the city with Central Park on my doorstep – not asking for much really.

Whilst running in Central Park I found myself in the middle of an organised walk for Aids and being nosey listened for a short while to the speech being made which was very political and anti Trump and so I soon set off on my way again – as far as I could go as they were closing off parts for the event.

In Chicago originally I had said to my husband I intended to run round the lake.  Yes that is right I had no idea how big Lake Michigan was so when we arrived he pointed to what looked like the sea as you can’t event see the other side and said that’s the lake you are running round ha ha.  We just ended up running alongside it for a while – it was so hot and I am not great in the heat.  Absolutely stunning though.

In total I ran over 28 miles whilst on holiday and I am pretty pleased with that – also made me feel less guilty about having the odd Reese’s peanut butter cup and knowing the final leg of our trip in Chicago would be with friends who I could count on for a good drink – to celebrate their recent baby of course ;-p

Have a weighed myself since I returned? Um…….no!

Be Fit London and Bike Events Cambridge 100 cycle ride

To start my bank holiday weekend I took the day off work and headed up to Angel to Be Fit London for the day with my friend Emma.  Think Ideal Home Show but health and fitness related and for women only.  We were VIPs for the day and so had full use of the VIP lounge and everything in it.

First on the agenda was using the Braid Bar to have our hair plaited – sounds slightly odd but the first thing a woman does when she is working out is shove the hair into a bun or ponytail and braids are perfect (Braid Bar can be found in Selfridges in London).  I went for two ponytail style plaits as I have thin old lady hair so actually felt a bit bad for the poor girl trying to make it look like big bulky plaits but she was amazing!

Next was to get our make up done – we did this all in the wrong order as we were booked onto a fitness class too and, for me at least, make up and fitness are not the best partners!  Sara Hill were there with a team of make up artists – I’m not a big make up user so for me it felt a little odd but my friend Emma looked gorgeous!

We were treated to Skinny prosecco – didn’t even know that such a thing existed and was really nice too with half the sugar!  Then it was time to shop and there were loads of stalls to look around.  I stocked up on Nakd bars for all my upcoming training they always work a treat and managed to get some more running tights from Reebok, one of the partners for the event.

But I have to tell you about the class we attended run by Gym Box called Pound because it was simply amazing!  It is described by Gym Box as:

“Pound is a full-body cardio jam session, combining light resistance with constant simulated drumming. The workout fuses cardio, Pilates, isometric movements, plyometrics and Isometric poses into a 45-minute series. Strengthen and sculpt infrequently used muscles, and drum your way to a leaner, slimmer physique – all while rocking out to your favourite music!”

All I can tell you is that it was so much fun and a great workout and I will be looking into both Gym Box and wherever I can get this class as I need it in my life!  If you check out my Instagram I reposted a video added to Instagram but the fabulous instructor.

Great event and will be back for more next year!

On Sunday a group of us headed to Cambridge for the Bike Events 100 mile bike ride – the boys headed off together and Laura, Helen and I set off together as our first 100 miler in preparation for our big Newcastle ride.

This ride was my idea and last year Helen and I took part in the 50 miler but the weather was vile heavy rain and wind and cold for the whole thing but it is flat and I figured it would be a good way to get some big miles in fairly early on in the season.

The first 50 miles were great and when I look at my ride results on Strava it is personal record after personal record.  Poor Laura got a puncture at mile 20 and we had to stop a few times to keep pumping it up as the first rest stop had no pump (poor show Bike Events) and we managed to convince her to use a gas canister before we got to a pub rest stop at mile 55 were there was a mechanic who sorted it with a proper pump (hand pumps and gas canisters are great to fix the problem but do not keep the tyre pumped up like a proper pump).  As we were in a rest stop in a pub it would have been rude not to have a cheeky shandy before we set off again and so we did!

But then the second 50 started and we hit the wind, excuse the language but the bast*rd wind!  It was pretty much 50 miles of relentless strong heavy winds for the rest of the ride, which was through what seemed to be the same field over and over and over again and again and again! The three of us got split up pretty quick but we kept regrouping though it was pretty much a case of get through as best you can without falling off your bike from the sidewinds that seemed to hate all cyclists in Cambridge.  Oh and the cobbled speed bumps at 86 miles through the town of Ely, for a woman, were nice and comfortable!

I think all three of us were feeling pretty miserable and disheartened but then with less than 20 miles to go we found out the boys had only just finished and realised everyone was struggling with the wind and quite selfishly that made us feel better!

We finally finished and collected our certificates – Bike Events when will you do medals?  I am a complete medal whore!  I think we all got sun burnt a little though Helen seemed to have suffered the worst!

I am Spartan, cycling and more fun at Nuclear #lovemud

At the weekend I took part in my first Spartan race at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.  I was part of a team filled with lovely people, one of whom was my husband and this was the first OCR I have done with him.  They all made it amazing!

I was a little dubious to begin with as you will know I am a huge fan of Nuclear Races and i love the mud and this was more of an urban OCR so I knew there would be a lack of water and mud, however, I had a blast!  Of course the company you are with makes the event for a huge part and I was in a team with my husband, training buddy I’ve mentioned a lot in my posts, Helen, and a load of lovelies!  My husband has already completed the trifecta before which is all three race distances in the space of a year – something I am signed up to do this year – eeeekkkk!!!

It starts with a little warm up and an introduction by a half naked, chiselled to within an inch of his life, spartan, which is always nice.  The marshalls were amazing the whole way round, really supportive, always with words of encouragement and Spartan had made great use of the area.  As always there were fellow Mudd Queens running and marshalling and always had a hug, high five or words of encouragement – the best group of women!

The run was 4.5 miles and had over 20 obstacles including barbed wire crawls, cargo nets, walls to climb over, atlas ball carry, monkey bars, sandbag carry and the dreaded spear throw and rope climb that are known as the burpee maker.  When you can’t complete an obstacle you have to complete 30 burpees and everyone loves burpees (not)!

IMG_5029

My husband was there to help everyone with all the walls – didn’t quite know his own strength though and after getting me up to the top of a 6 foot wall prompted pushed my leg and launched me over it.  To be honest I totally appreciated the help as the walls scare me and are not something I am ready to conquer on my own – but one day….

Getting to the end and getting my medal and third of the trifecta medal was amazing and we smiled the whole way round.  The best thing about obstacle runs is the attitude of most people taking part – everyone helps and there is no judgement!

I followed up with Sunday having a 40 odd mile bike ride with some of the lovelies at Romford CC with some new members and then just to top the weekend off I ended up back at Nuclear for another taster session with my friend Becky and son, Jack that ended with another go on the Death Slide with new polished surface and kicker the whole way along – awesome!  I could go Nuclear every weekend I just love it!  Don’t get me wrong I am not brilliant at it but I am better than I was and every taster session I pick up new hints and tips whilst introducing new people to it and they all get why I love it there!

IMG_5027

Needless to say my legs are covered in bruises (OCR kisses) but it was completely worth it!

Zwift FTP Training

I did a blog post a while ago about a Functional Threshold Power (FTP) test I took.  In this test you can see what your FTP is, generally over a 20 minute period, and this determines your ability to sustain the highest possible power output. The test on Zwift can last either 45 minutes or 75 minutes including a warm up and some interval training before the actual 20 minute test itself begins and as a result 95% of the 20 minute average power is used to determine FTP.  I wasn’t entirely sure what the difference between the shorter and longer one was and so opted for the longer one (because I obviously have some weird masochistic tendencies to inflict pain upon myself).

Once you have completed your FTP test the programme sets your training plans by this level and gives the ability to easily see improvements.

In my previous test I scored 169 and when I took the test last week I was 184 so good to see an improvement though the test itself still made me feel physically sick and my legs were like jelly.  My aim for the end of 2016 is to break the 200 power mark.

I have an epic ride I am undertaking in August and so I figured this is good training in addition to road riding that will only benefit me in the run up and as part of my training plan and I know numerous people who train using an app called Zwift and so signed myself up on a free trial and following the test itself I have started an FTP builder training plan they offer.  Weeks 1 and 2 were for those who are unfit and whilst I am not an athlete by any means I wouldn’t class myself as a newbie so I skipped to week 3 and have completed that programme over the past week.

zwift

Obviously the typical English weather means sometimes it can not be enticing to get out on the bike and sometimes too dangerous meaning turbo training is the best means of training and Zwift offers an alternative where you can do this sort of training with the added benefit of being able to train with friends who are also users.  You can follow routes online with other users from all over the world in a 3D online environment.

You can sync with your Strava to load your ride directly and see all the stats from your ride including simulated elevation, average speed and also segment information.

It’s a simple concept where you put your bike on a turbo trainer and get going.  I use a Wahoo Kickr, which is an impressive piece of kit and means that as I ride the courses the trainer changes the resistance in real time based on road gradient providing the most realistic experience without actually being out on the road.

You can chat with other users and they can give you a thumbs up as you are riding and you can do the same to them.  Over the past week I’ve seen some quite large groups riding together and chatting along the way.

The turbo is not my most favourite piece of kit as there is no natural movement and I find it can become uncomfortable pretty quickly especially when the sessions I completed this week, covering 153 km, could last up to 1 hour 25 minutes and your husband thinks he is funny by increasing your FTP to 340 so 1 hour 15 minutes of pure torture and hell at such a high resistance I thought my knees would give out.  I have a table fan on full blast, towel on the handle bars, water bottle in the bottle cage and music blaring – it is the only way I can get by on a turbo.  I actually saw this advert recently and not only did it make my laugh out loud but I could totally relate to it – honest and accurate!

There is currently a free 14 day trial being offered on their site and if you are a Strava premium user you can get a two month free trial so if you fancy it get yourself signed up and give it a go!

I Am My Biggest Critic!

As you know I did Brentwood half marathon on Sunday, my first half marathon, and if you read my previous blog post you will know it was not my best moment.

Since then I’ve had loads of comments, messages and support from people telling me how well I did and how I should be chuffed with myself. I am my biggest critic and so since Sunday have spent most of my time either feeling sorry for myself, sulking, beating myself up or having a bit of a cry.

I will explain why.

All of my training runs went better than that one event I was actually training for. My pacing was better in my training runs.   My hill running was better in my training runs.  My breathing was better in my training runs. I didn’t feel as down on myself in my training runs. It was like all the advice I’d been given and everything I’d learned just went out of the window and I fell apart.

My original goal when signing up for my first half marathon was to complete it in under 3 hours.  As my training continued and went well I then realised my goal should be to complete it in under 2.5 hours. Now I had received a lot of advice telling me that for my first half marathon I should just be aiming to complete it.

Before the event I wanted to complete the actual distance and did so with the help of my husband.  We completed it in 2 hours 21 minutes and so I think, rightly or wrongly, in my head I had this time that I was centred around and was secretly hoping I would better that.

The week before I spent most of it in bed with laryngitis and a fever that completely wiped me out and despite lots of advice that I should pull out I decided to do the event regardless. Anyone who knows me will know I am way too stubborn and not doing it was not an option.

I was disappointed that I had several stops for water as my throat was on fire.  I was disappointed I overheated pretty quickly into the run.  I was disappointed the hills and inclines beat me.  I was disappointed I felt like I let down the two lovely friends who ran with me (who both could have smashed that but ran with me instead). I was disappointed that I found it such a struggle.  I was disappointed in how I felt and had to keep apologising to my friends running with me. I was disappointed my time was 8 minutes slower than my training run of the same distance. I was disappointed my husband would have been patiently waiting for me at the finish.

But you know what?

I did complete a half marathon. I did complete a half marathon when I wasn’t well.  I did complete a half marathon in under 2.5 hours, which was the original goal. So I didn’t do too bad I guess?

As a treat my husband has now entered the both of us into the Hackney half marathon and we will run together and I will not let this beat me!

Les Mills Live

On Saturday I spent the day at the Excel Arena in London at the Les Mills Live London date of their global tour.  Les Mills is a fitness brand you may have heard of in your local gym.  They say ‘We’re on a mission to create a fitter planet. This doesn’t mean making people work out. It means helping people fall in love with fitness so that they want to work out.’

IMG_4565

The live global tour saw Les Mills teaming up with Reebok hosting 9 events worldwide where both instructors and participants could take part in a day long of live instructed classes.  If you have done their classes in the gym you will know what to expect (not me so much) but can imagine the atmosphere with it being on such a large scale.  The music is blasting, lights are flashing, everyone is raring to go and bodies are jumping, stretching, lunging, you name it in time with the amazing instructors.

And I did it with some of the amazing guys from Team Scrambled Legs that I did Nuclear Fallout and Bear Grylls with too.  Now I can’t lie I was nervous especially as 3 of our group are instructors and they all train together in these classes.  I was a Les Mills virgin.  Well not completely but I’ve not done Body Step or Body Pump in well over a year and even then that was my limited knowledge so I felt like I knew nothing.

We started with Body Balance, which is a  yoga-based class aimed to improved flexibility and strength in which you complete moves from yoga, tai chi and pilates.  I was next to Laura and Steve so on one hand Steve was in the zone from the start and every time I looked at Laura I giggled as it was clear I am not overly flexible but I held my own and got through the class absolutely fine so my nerves were a lot calmer.

IMG_4572

Our second class was Body Attack, which is a cardio class.  It was high energy right from the start and included all sorts of moves including running, lunging, jumping, lunges, push ups and squats.  Everyone seemed to know what to do and I managed to follow for the most part though positioned myself near Vicki, Amy and Lauren (who are the instructors in our group) and tried to copy them as they were the pros.  Initially I was next to my friend Laura but she was like a woman possessed and if I’m honest scared me a little.  I did ok though did have a few moments where I was like Phoebe in Friends when she did her tap class and sort of free styled a little (probably whilst looking like a complete idiot but I was having fun).

IMG_4570

The third class was Body Pump and I had done this before though I must admit I never really knew what I was doing and so once again I positioned myself near Vicki, Amy and Laura not really knowing what weights I should be using so they helped me massively and this was my favourite class.  So much so that I am signing up this week at the gym and will be including this in future for sure!  This class works on all the muscle groups and focuses on strength for a total body workout.  To give an idea of the scale of this event the photo below shows the room before the class started – huge! Amazing!

IMG_4553

The last class was Sprint.  I am a regular spin class participant so figured this would be more in my comfort zone but I can only describe it as a spin class on drugs.  It is a 30 minute class and is basically a HIIT version of RPM and because it is on the bike there is minimal joint impact as well.  HIIT sessions are always good as you are burning off calories after the workout itself and I am always up for that!

IMG_4571

I had such an amazing day and will absolutely be back for more on the next tour.  The guys I was with were amazing and I am going to look forward to attending their classes in the future though also a little scared as they were like duracell bunnies and I am sure they could just keep going and going!

It’s also an excuse to buy more active wear – I’ve never seen such a collection of lycra in one place.  Thank god there was not a fire as I am sure so much synthetic material would have been a disaster.

Also pleased I had spare clothes and deodorant with me as the centre by the end of the day this place had a smell of its own – much like a school gym changing room on heat but with a party atmosphere!

Mothers day at Base Jump

As yesterday was Mothers Day it was my choice what we did in the day and so I started the day with another session of hot yoga.  Some of the people in the session amaze me!  We had a move called the crow and it is basically balancing on your hands with your legs off the floor – yeah not happening for me I would have face planted for sure!  The squatting I was fine with down to the floor and back up again but my weight on my hands and just my hands – will be a long time before I master that I fear!

And so what to do after?  Well it was a simple – a visit to a new trampoline park near us called Base Jump.

Base Jump is the biggest trampoline park in the South East spread over 35,000 square feet. It includes:

  • two launch areas each with four trampolines and a higher level to jump from into either a foam pit or onto a giant air bag
  • basketball slam dunk
  • three dodgeball courts
  • a trampoline halfpipe
  • a huge freestyle jump area with 75 interlinked trampolines
  • a battle beam with giant joust poles
  • a soft play area for younger children
  • and my favourite – a ninja challenge area that included a climbing wall, monkey bars, ropes to swing across, metal swings with a beam to work your way across, all of which are above a foam pit.

Of course there are a lot of children there though we were a group of four adults.  With no shame.  This is the sort of place anyone can have fun!  And we did!

IMG_4388

Now I am partial to an obstacle and so it surprised me that when I got to the top of the 2 metre high platform it took me a while to jump off (into a foam pit).  I couldn’t not do it with 3 friends waiting and several children aged anywhere from I guess age 4 upwards successfully launching themselves off it!  I managed it 3 times though not gracefully and not landing how I wanted to either but still.

IMG_4389

The ninja challenge I loved!  And I successfully got across the climbing wall twice, which pleased me as I know there is something similar at a Spartan race I have next month and also because I had fallen off something similar at Nuclear – nailed it!

IMG_4390

Of course they cater for children and parties but also offer teen sessions on Fridays from 8-10pm and adult sessions on Fridays from 10-12pm.  Coming soon they will also be offering fitness classes.

If you’ve not been then you should get down there as you will have an amazing time!  I will be going back some time very very soon!

Fun little fact I learned from their website too:

‘you burn more calories bouncing for 10 minutes than you do jogging for 30.  Studies show that just one hour of jumping on a trampoline burns over 1000 calories.  It’s the best cardio you will ever enjoy!’

Who can argue with that?  What are you waiting for?
