Hello Fresh

Back in June last year I completed a trial of Hello Fresh for Healthy Living London.  You can read the review here.

I was sceptical.  If I am honest I was thinking it would take some convincing for me to be converted.  Why was I sceptical?  I am a self confessed food snob and I was worried the food would not be fresh and it would be boring recipes that I would soon get bored of.  But I was happy to be proved wrong

Following the two week trial I was really impressed!  I even purchased the cookbook for my grandparents.  I then signed up to continue with the meals and over eight months later I am still a fan.

8c14ba26-2649-42b0-995e-b4d550c746ed

I like being able to choose in advance what I want to have for upcoming weeks and that I can put on hold if I am on holiday and resume once back.

I found I got stuck in a rut before using Hello Fresh where I would be so busy with full time work and training alongside a family including a dog and often settle for a bagel for dinner and wonder why I woke the following morning wanting to eat everything in sight.

I genuinely haven’t had a bad meal since subscribing to Hello Fresh.  I have had an item missing and phoned and the customer service was great – very apologetic, credit added to my account that is then taken off future orders and sorted quickly.  For a period I did notice the portion size of the fish and sweet potatoes seemed to be getting smaller plus carrots seemed to be quite bendy but I provided some feedback and haven’t had a problem since.

It works perfectly for me and my family.  I have a husband, son, dog, full time job and train at least four times per week.  Being able to open the fridge and simply pull out a bag with everything I need and follow a clearly laid out recipe card step by step is a saving grace.  My husband and son also don’t eat meat and that has not caused a problem either – we always ate more fish than meat anyway but found the recipes easy to adapt and if I picked a meat one could almost always divide and do him a portion with some fish I would buy or vice versa.

All of the meals are created by the Hello Fresh chefs and nutritionists so I know what I am eating is good for me.  I don’t need to worry about portion size as you pre determine how many people you are cooking for.  It also keeps it interesting – in the time I have been having these meals I have not yet had the same one twice.

And all the packaging is recyclable and the bags and boxes come with cute little messages encouraging you to do just that and recycle them.

If you are tempted check out the website here and if you use the code LISATHA you get £20 off your first box too!

The only person I couldn’t convince was my step dad.  He said he is not keen on all that origami they sprinkle over everything – I think he meant oregano ha ha!

Your Pilates Physio

There are more and more resources available to enable you to exercise from the comfort of your own home without any need for a gym membership or attending a class.  This can also be more time efficient for some.  I myself have used some workouts from You Tube previously especially if I am looking for something targeted like a tight back after a long bike ride (this is an area I can often suffer with).  So whilst I love attending classes like at my CrossFit box for the support, and for the social aspect also, I find I push myself harder but I am also happy to do what I can at home.  At present we are in the middle of having house renovations done and part of this will be our own gym in the garden so there will, in fact, be more home workouts.

What is the major difference between pilates and yoga?  Aside from the origin, pilates was created in early 1900s by Joseph Pilates who, as a result of certain diseases through his childhood, had limited mobility and so the thought process behind this was predominantly for rehabilitation to build strength, stamina and flexibility.  In yoga there is an infinite number of variations and combinations of poses whereas in pilates have more consistent moves in the traditional practise.  Yoga can work your entire body through meditative exercises that typically are held for longer, whereas pilates centres around your core and focuses on control.  In short there is no right or wrong as to which one you choose and this should be based around your goals – or do both!

One area I will always admit I fall down on is stretching and I have incorporated yoga into my schedule and so when I had the opportunity to trial a new platform for home pilates workouts I was keen.

yourpilatesphysio

For the past two weeks I have been using a platform called Your Pilates Physio, which has online clinical pilates courses led by Lyndsay.  Clinical pilates is slightly different from the usual pilates practise and to quote the website:

‘Clinical Pilates is different from regular Pilates practice as it is led by a qualified physiotherapist, who has a deeper knowledge of the body and its injuries/pathologies, including how this can affect the movement of the body. Clinical Pilates is particularly effective for people with an injuries or pain-related conditions, as exercises are adapted to take this into account and help with pain management and recovery.’

This fits in nicely with my training as I often suffer with a sore lower back after some bike sessions and now I attend CrossFit I need to make sure I am incorporating active recovery in between classes. I am also still in the process of strengthening my left knee and thigh following some injuries last year.

Throughout the videos Lyndsay explains every movement and the reasons behind it giving clear instructions as to how you should be positioned and what to avoid and concentrate on.  At the start of each video it will display items you need and for the most part it is a mat and a block and if you don’t have a block you can use a pillow so no need for further expense on additional items.  There are also options for both beginner and intermediate so Lyndsay will demonstrate the differences and you can tailor to what suits you as an individual.

There are literally hours and hours of workouts available and they are all grouped so you can focus on whatever your specific need may be for example hypermobility, sports injuries or glute focus.

There is also much more than that available on the website with resources and blog posts by Lyndsay.

My only negative – what I would describe as the plinky planky music, just not for me but that is such a minor thing and doesn’t take away from the actual workouts at all.

There is a free 14 day trial (which is actually extended to 30 days right now) on the website and if you do decide to subscribe you can do so monthly or annually.  If you do then use the code ‘fit19’ for a 25% discount.

Anna’s Legs Review – Don’t Forget Love Your Bottom!

Let’s talk women’s cycling kit.  There is a general feeling among some women that there is not a lot out there for us ladies who like to cycle though I would disagree – there is a lot and most brands who sell male cycling kit also sell female cycling kit.  Perhaps the misunderstanding comes about because they are not exclusively women only brands.

img_6504

Anna’s Legs is a premium brand of padded cycling leggings.  You will find these to purchase exclusively at Velo Vixen.  Why are they called Anna’s Legs?  Simple and effective – the lady who designs them in called Anna Glowinski and to quote the brand ‘The focus of the collection is legs, the tools that enable us to pedal our bikes and take us as far or as fast as we want to go. Anna has been designing cycle clothing for nearly a decade and her experience as a cyclist goes into every stitch.’  I have seen them before, I know of the brand, but I do not own a pair myself and there are various reasons for this.

I was sent a pair of the new leggings to review and was keen to do so to give me a first hand view of the product.  My 2019 is all about the bike and so this is timely and I have a lot of opportunity to test the kit!

First of all they arrived and the leggings come in a little bag, which was cute.  Especially the note on it saying not to forget your bottom!  Aside from a good saddle I don’t think I would ever cycle again without padded bottoms of some sort – comfort is key here and a good pair of padded shorts/leggings/bibs are a must!  There is nothing worse than a sore under carriage (sorry there is no nicer way to say that).  Inside the bag is also a long tag with lots of hints and tips how to look after your legs as well as describing the product design.  I particularly like the ‘take your knickers off’ note and I remember when I first started and was told this I wasn’t sure if someone was winding me up – no underwear?  Definitely no underwear!  This can cause chaffing and also will defeat the use of chamois cream (a cream used to stop friction between skin and clothing).

Then came to looking at the leggings and I will admit I held them up and my first thought was that I was unsure if they were going to fit – they looked quite small.  I am a size 14 and that is what these are though do note that on the website you will want to check the sizing guide as the purchase is made with the options for S/M/L/XL.  The design of the leggings is a high waist, and at first the shape looked a bit odd holding it up, however, I say odd as they are just shaped very differently at the waist/top of the leggings than any of the other shorts/tights that I have.  However, I needed have worried as they were perfect!  Sturdy material – being a woman any pair of bottoms has the obligatory squat test just to check and these passed easily.  Washing instructions printed directly on the material so no need for an annoying flappy tag.  Pocket on the back to fit a key/card.  Reflective logo and tabs on the ankle too.

Added perk maybe was the ever elusive thigh gap lots of woman seek (not me but it does seem to be a thing).  Perhaps just for me but the design and pad positioning gave an automatic thigh gap.

img_6502

So the first test was on the turbo trainer, which is a bit harsh as the lack of natural movement on a static bike trainer can result in being sore despite the best of kit (for me anyway).  I needn’t have worried as they were super comfortable so I was impressed before I even got them out on the road!

img_6503

The next test was out on the road.  Given the choice I am an outdoors girl and will always opt for being outside on my bike rather than inside.  Again really comfortable, the waistband didn’t move around and they were warm too – well as warm as any kit when its only 1 or 2 degrees outside!  I was a little gutted that I got the ever present oily chain ring mark on my pretty leggings!  I realise not everyone gets this but I do (a lot).  Also I am 5 foot 6 and there was some gathering behind the knee – not a big deal at all, however, for anyone shorter I would assume the standard length, which these are, may possibly be too long in the leg?  They also washed up fab.

24af255f-6ecf-4ba3-9026-4661f6e19f3d

So why hadn’t I tried these before?  For me I have always used either bib shorts or bib tights, depending on the weather.  This is personal preference but I find them more comfortable and don’t want the muffin top or be worrying about moving my kit around whilst cycling – I just want to get on with the actual cycling itself!  These didn’t move around though and didn’t roll over at the waist either (there is a silicone grip on the back of the high waist to keep in place – similar to what you may have seen at the bottom hem of jerseys).  I also felt that given my preference was for bibs (which generally cost more) that the price was on the high side, however, they are marketed as a premium brand.

Now lets talk price.  The leggings I tested are the new Forest Print Padded Tights and they are priced at £99.  I have paid, in the past, as little as £15 for bottoms and as much as £145 and I am sure you can find lower and higher if you looked.  I am a member of a cycling club and take part in a number of club rides and sportives, which means my riding distances could range from 10 miles on the turbo to almost 200 miles at an event so for me comfort is key and whilst I am far from having an endless budget if it is fit for my purpose it is worth the investment.  I also like to speak to others for opinions before spending out a lot on kit – the £145 bib shorts I mentioned earlier were no more comfortable than the £15 and that is extremely frustrating!  To date I must say the bib shorts/tights from my cycling club are by far the most comfortable and would always be my go to as a first choice and they are £70.99 for the shorts or £137 for the tights and in my opinion worth every penny.

I spoke to a number of women I know who cycle recently for their opinion to try and gain a general overview to gauge what they look for when purchasing cycling kit.  My intention was to try and find out what their preference is regarding shorts/leggings/bibs, the main priority when purchasing kit ie comfort/appearance and also what they felt a reasonable price to pay would be?  The majority seemed to opt for bibs, comfort is the main priority with appearance being quite important also and the prices they would be willing to pay ranged from £30 to £100 though the average was around the £50/£60 mark.

Kit will always be a contentious issue and can be very expensive if you let it or can afford it.  When I first started cycling my kit mainly consisted of what I would ‘borrow’ from my husband that he didn’t use too often.

2f7569ff-3c9b-4988-aa13-d0df61bb2026

Now I have had the chance to try a pair of Anna’s Legs I am impressed and I would buy them, though I think if I am honest it would take some to get me to convert completely from bibs though the ease for rest stops is quite the bonus without bibs. I am currently eyeing up the reflective glowing hearts as these would be great for my winter training and add to being safe and seen.  They also have a couple of three quarter length bottoms in the sale right now in certain sizes if you want to grab a bargain before the summer months come!

I was gifted the cycling leggings, but all opinions are my own.

Craft Sportswear

Craft is a brand that I am familiar with, however, more from the European events I have attended and not so much in the UK.  This is a shame as the kit I have had has been great and affordable!  Anyone who is into any form of exercise will know that kit and equipment come at a price and even buying the essentials can quickly add up.

I recently reviewed the new Craft Fuseknit Jersey, that you can read here, which came just at the right time as the weather started cooling and I am certain will be one of my most used items through the winter months.

img_5135

I am signed up for a number of events in 2019 and so I am aiming to ensure my training continues through the winter and good kit will be a massive benefit.

When my husband and some friends completed Ironman Dubai 70.3 instead of a finishing tshirt they were given a gillet (slightly odd for a country with such high temperatures but great for them) and it is an item that is handy especially over the winter when trying to get layering right.

Given the opportunity to try out the Craft Urban Run Body Warmer it was an easy yes.  The body warmer is pretty much the same as a gillet, and I didn’t even have to complete a half ironman to get one ha ha.

So the body warmer is again another Craft item that at first glance looked great though it was the same size as the jersey but more snug around the chest area when trying on for the first time so I was unsure how I would get on with it (and yes, I am quite large chested).  As the large is the biggest size in this item for women I tried again and decided to give it a go and see how I got on.  It fit and I could zip it up but not being the best runner I was slightly concerned that being tighter across the chest would not help with the breathing aspect of running and well breathing is pretty crucial in life!

Off I set with the dog for my first run in it and like the jersey I decided I may as well test it in weather that it claims to have benefits in.  The label stated it was quick dry, water repellent and wind protective.  I was setting out in the cold with rain coming down and bitter cold winds – lets see how good this item really is.

It was great!

I came back with a drowned rat of a dog from the weather and sopping wet hair but with the jersey and body warmer I wasn’t cold at all.  Don’t get me wrong I had been for a run so will always work up a sweat but it was that sort of weather where I procrastinated going in the first place then figured right Craft kit lets see what you’re made of (don’t worry I wasn’t actually debating with the items of clothing).

img_5729

The gillet had beads of rain all over it that literally just wiped off and was dry to the touch straight away.  The jersey was pretty much the same.  The body warmer fit really nice, was super comfortable and actually very flattering.

I have since run in it twice and walked the dog in it too.  When I layer up I always worry I will actually end up too hot but this is really lightweight and was just right.

The body warmer is £65, which is a lot cheaper than most leading brands when I was looking for running gillets.

I was gifted the jersey and gillet, but all opinions are my own.

Go Bites – I am a fan!

I have written a previous post on fuelling for events and make no excuses for the fact that I am a total food snob and like to know exactly what I am eating especially when fuelling for events.  I won’t preach that one way is better than another as I think it is a completely personal thing and what works for one very easily could not work for someone else.  I have found, for me, this has been very trial and error.  In the post, that can be read here, I talk about Go Faster Food.

I first met with Kate and Sophie from Go Bites on a Skype call where they found out more about me and vice versa.  It was nice to talk to two inspiring ladies who were passionate about the product and keen to understand more of what my goals were and how I could use their product to help.

A little more about these ladies – Sophie is a personal trainer, registered nutritionist and has a masters in sport and exercise nutrition and is also an amazing sportswoman too.  Kate is the face of the brand and one of the founders.  Both of these ladies are extremely active and their passion is evident as they are working on a product and brand that they use themselves.

Earlier in the year I attending a training camp in Lanzarote and went armed with my go bites for fuel for cycling and running.  I also took spare and dished them out to many people within my triathlon club and they were well received!  I have also used these balls when participating in two half marathons with a friend who subsequently used them herself when she took part in another half marathon.

The book they have has also provided some staple recipes that now form part of my event routine such as the overnight oats, porridge and there is always a jar of granola in my kitchen now too.  If you check out their website you can find some free recipes that could interest you.

I was excited to learn that there would be three new flavours added to the range and of course didn’t pass up on the opportunity to try these and give some feedback.  The flavours available now are:

  • Date and coconut boost balls
  • Raspberry and cacao boost balls (NEW)
  • Apricot and seed refuel balls
  • Strawberry and cashew refuel balls (NEW)
  • Hazlenut and cacao recover balls
  • Blackcurrant and blueberry recover balls (NEW)

What are they like? I really like them.  They fit perfectly into a running belt, cycle jersey pocket or bike bag and also my handbag as a snack!  I have also been adding them cut up to my porridge of a morning.

So in short the new flavours get a thumbs up from me, with the raspberry and cacao balls being my favourite, and I look forward to using them more in the future as my training continues through the winter.

These go bites are all gluten, wheat, dairy free with no added sugar free and are also vegan. Using 100% natural ingredients is certainly something that appeals to me to ensure I am more conscious about what I am fuelling myself with.

If you would like to try the Go Bites you can use code TASTER20 for 20% off your first order over £9.99.

The product I received was complimentary, but all opinions are my own.

Julia Buckley’s Ignite Programme and the Southend Rudolph 5 mile run

So as you know I had the fantastic opportunity to take part in a four week pilot for a new programme by Julia Buckley, called Ignite.

Ignite is a high impact 30 minute a day, 6 days a week exercise programme and has become my routine over the past month.  One of my goals was to complete the workout early in the morning to start off my day right and not leave any excuse why I cannot do it in the evening so 5.30am has become my normal alarm time (yawn).  Surprisingly I didn’t miss a single workout over the whole month – don’t get me wrong I wake up like everyone else sometimes thinking meh but I got up and did it and feel so much better for it!

There are many benefits of working out like this such as:

  • quick but effective workout
  • burning more calories and fat
  • improves endurance and aerobic capacity
  • no equipment is necessary so this can be done at home, outside or in the gym (pretty much wherever you want – within reason, I mean you may look slightly odd breaking out into a workout on a packed train say)
  • helps with metabolism
  • super efficient

I won’t lie before this programme I had never done this sort of training and I did rather stupidly think that 30 minutes a day was a winner for me as it would be quick and easy.  Ha ha easy it was not!  Good job I set my alarm for 5.30am as I was (as usual) a sweaty tomato after every single workout so needed time to wash my hair and full on shower before I headed to work (and let my face return to normal non-red sweaty tomato colour).

I also loved the fact that every workout was different, which I was really impressed with. I am sure if I had to put it together there would be doubling up all over the place but Julia cleverly designs all the exercises around the theme of the workout.  They covered:

  • full body
  • lower body
  • arms
  • core
  • cardio
  • toning

Now there is a clear difference between Julia’s level of fitness and mine, for one Julia can talk during the workout, which I most definitely can not.  However, the beauty of this is that there are alternatives to do if you want to make it easier or harder.

Julia has an online gym and so you would log on and exercise alongside the video.  In addition to this you can talk to other people who subscribe to the online gym so the support from Julia and the members is amazing.

If I am honest I am going to miss the workouts – even the 5.30am alarm calls!

I can’t recommend Julia and her programmes enough and I noticed the improvement yesterday when I took part in a 5 mile Rudolph run.  Now I don’t particularly like running but I do it (means to an end as I like to eat and drink).  The run yesterday was 5 miles and it was along the seafront in the cold, wind and rain.  On pretty much every run my first mile will be quicker than I can maintain and at some point I might use some excuse like adjusting a strap or something in order to stop and take a breather.  BUT I didn’t need to do that today I ran and I checked my pace and when it felt hard I slowed ever so slightly until I could pick up the pace again.  I won’t know if it is a PB as I have never completed a 5 mile distance run before to compare it to but I was far less grumpy than usual and I ran with my husband and he was impressed with my improvement and I know many people on Julia’s plans notice an improvement in other disciplines such as running.

IMG_2978

So if you are thinking of switching things up a bit, can’t get to a gym, don’t want to go to a gym, want help and advice and a tailored workout you should check it out – it works!

The plan will be available to download in ebook form in the new year so I will add a link when it is.

Halfway through my Julia Buckley pilot programme

I am halfway through my four week Ignite pilot programme and I am loving it!

Don’t get me wrong I chose to set my alarm daily for 5.30am so that I can get the workout done before I went to work so that I could not fall into the trap of getting back late or being too tired and making excuses not to do it. I can’t lie there have been a couple of mornings my alarm has gone off and I have thought please let me stay in this warm and cosy bed but no I’ve got up and got it done!  No excuses!

My husband is my accountability buddy and he knows the score but so far I’ve been so good he hasn’t had to kick my butt at all (insert smug face here).

Julia Buckley has an online gym and the support on there is incredible.  Julia is on hand every day and so are all the other members so the conversation flows so easily, which is incredible in terms of support and swapping advice.

The workouts are 30 minutes each but don’t let that fool you into thinking that they may be an easy 30 minute workout because they are not.  I am dripping in sweat after all of them.

It works the same as HIIT workouts with maximum calorie burning in minimum time, achieved by intervals of high and medium intensity exercises.  No equipment is needed so this can be done at home, in the park, at the gym – lots of options.  the workouts are more interesting than the norm so don’t get boring at all.

Of course you only get out what you put in so you do need to give it your all for the duration of the workout.

In order to see the results from the pilot programme I have kept other working out to a minimum though I have had an 8 mile run and a spin class.  I’ve lost one pound and when I ran I slowed it down by 30 seconds per mile and it felt much better than before so for me at the end of this programme it is not weight loss or measurements that will be the tell tale signs of results from this but if there is an improvement in my running.

So the programme is going well though yesterday I did have a toddler tantrum as I didn’t want to run, I was tired, I wanted to lay in my bed or on the sofa and stay under my warm blanket.  But I got up and changed and headed out the door for a run.  After two laps round the block my Garmin watch had not picked up the satellite signal and the wind was blowing and it had started raining and I’d had enough and decided I would just stop right there so no run.  After all if it isn’t on Strava it didn’t happen! ha ha

My four week plan with the amazing Julia Buckley

Very excited to announce that as of tomorrow I will be taking part as a member of a pilot testing group for the four-week online fitness programme for the amazing Julia Buckley.

Julia is a fitness trainer based in London, who shares support and advice on fitness and fat loss – you will probably have heard of her and may even have her amazing book The Fat Burn Revolution.

During this programme I have committed myself to completing five to six 30 minute workout videos per week.

My main goal from this programme is to increase my overall fitness and have a good base that I can then continue with long after the four week programme.  I have picked this as my main goal because up until now I have concentrated mainly on running and cycling and have started to introduce other aspects such as weights (though have not done that much up until now) and pilates to try and add some overall improvement in my fitness, which I know will in turn benefit both my running and cycling.  I am 55lbs down on my journey so far and have at least another 28lbs to go and without adding some overall fitness, including toning up I will almost certainly look good when clothed but like a crepe paper saggy god knows what underneath!  I’ve hit a plateau and I want to feel better, look great and know I’m healthy.  I want to be better than I used to be.  Most importantly I want ‘normal’ people (like me) to realise you have to start somewhere and yes it will take time but it will be worth it and you can do it – I used to think there is no way I can do that but I am and if that inspires someone then I am happy with that!

There are three things I will be doing for the next 4 weeks as part of this programme and they are:
  1. Getting up earlier in the morning to complete the workout videos prior to starting my working day and set my off first thing on the right track.
  2. Making sure that I drink at least 1.5 litres of water per day – I went through a period of being very good with this but of late sometimes get to mid afternoon at work and realise I’ve had one cup of tea and one glass of water and can feel the dehydration when working out.
  3. Planning my meals in advance – I am usually very good with what I eat and 99% of the time I am a ‘from fresh’ girl who cooks but with an active lifestyle I have tended to, of late, eat a lot of variations of egg as its quick and easy and can mix with avocado, smoked salmon etc but planning will give more a variation for my meals.
I have roped in the help of my hubby for this programme.  He will be my accountability buddy.  I was going to choose my son but I changed my mind as he is 17 and try as I might to get him involved in my weight loss and fitness journey he is just not that interested in either (as you would expect from a 17 year old boy) and is lucky enough that he doesn’t seem to share the genes that myself and my husband have as we have always been a bit bigger and he is the polar opposite with very little fat despite the fact that he could eat more than the two of us put together!

So over the next four weeks I will be sharing with you how I am getting on with this new programme.

Ufit Protein Drink review

The lovely people at The Protein Drinks Company were looking for people to review some of their product and it fit quite nicely for me to do with my new active lifestyle.

IMG_1243

I am surrounded by cyclists, runners and generally super fit and healthy people and as I currently only have 1 or 2 rest days most weeks I am conscious that my nutrition is something that cannot slip in order to get the best results from my training.

Protein put simply is important for the growth and development of muscles. Protein assists with the development and maintenance of lean muscle mass and can benefit overall health, also increasing metabolism and acting as an aid in weight loss.

Protein is of course not the only element for nutrition during training and should be taking into consideration along with carbohydrates and fat.

There are different ways to incorporate protein into your diet;

  • Lean meat (chicken, pork, turkey, some cuts of beef)
  • Fish (tuna, halibut, salmon, tilapia, sardines)
  • Eggs
  • Dairy products (milk, cheese, yoghurt – greek yoghurt is a good source and Skyr is a good high protein yoghurt)
  • Beans, pulses, nuts and seeds (lentils, peas and also nut butters – we are a fan of cashew butter in our house)
  • Veggies and fruits
  • Quinoa
  • Soy products (tofu, edamame – if you like tofu that is – its not for me!)
  • Protein powders
  • Protein shakes

Homemade protein drinks are the preference in our house and my husband loves to experiment with our Nutri Bullet though there is an increase in ready made protein drinks that you can buy from most supermarkets now for ease.

U Fit drinks are pre mixed protein drinks that are quick and easy to have ensuring you get your protein fix.  I was sent the strawberry and chocolate U Fit milk with added oomph.  They are 310ml bottles and contain:

  • 22g protein
  • No added sugar
  • Low in fat
  • Rich in calcium
  • Vitamins and fibre

I was also sent the strawberry and chocolate U Fit Pro 50 supersize protein shakes, which can be used as a single serving or split between two servings in between meals.  They are 500ml bottles and contain:

  • 50g protein
  • Low in fat
  • Rich in calcium
  • Vitamins and fibre
  • Rich in amino acids

The drinks were delivered just in time for our annual cycling club BBQ and so I was able to hand out to members of the club in order to get more feedback than just mine!

IMG_1112

So here are the pros:

  • Most thought it was easy to drink.
  • Most thought the U Fit Milk with added oomph was a good consistency; I agreed – I’m not a fan of thick shakes or smoothies and so would have been put off it if were an overly thick consistency.
  • Low fat – however, compared to other shakes on the market it is a little on the high side by comparison but just a little.
  • Favourite flavour seemed to be hands down strawberry over the chocolate.
  • Handy as a pre made protein fix and to drink on the go without having to mix.
  • The U Fit Milk with added oomph is priced at £2.00 per bottle in Tesco and currently half price so you may want to stock up while it is only £1.00 per bottle (until mid-September)!

And here are the cons:

  • A couple of people did think the consistency was a little too thick and heavy for their tastes.  The Pro 50 seems to be a lot thicker and would be better split over two servings rather than just the one.  The benefit of mixing from powder does mean you can determine the consistency better.
  • The bottle says to ‘serve chilled and shake up your health’ – do shake the drink otherwise there is a slightly oily taste to it.
  • There was a general consensus that although it was fine whilst drinking there was a slightly artificial aftertaste.
  • The chocolate flavour tasted a little on the tinny/metallic side.
  • The Pro 50 is priced at £3.75 per bottle in Tesco and so slightly on the expensive side compared to other brands marketing similar products so maybe not an everyday purchase.

Considering the pros and cons lists above seem heavier on the cons most people said that they would buy and use again.  I would say if you like a thick shake you will love the Pro 50 but if you don’t then, like me, this one will probably not be a hit with you.  It does say they are for ‘use between meals as a nutritious snack or on the go when you’re pushed for time’ and that sums it up for me; for me they would be post workout rather than just through the day and more of a quick fix if I were out and about and wanted to buy something like this without having prepared my own rather than part of my weekly shopping list or my regular diet, I am afraid.  A good product, and one of the better tasting protein shakes out there, and I would drink again though for me only as an emergency quick fix.
